Dr. Matthew Karsten
A member of the American Dental Association, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Academy of Pediatrics, Illinois State Dental Society, Chicago Dental Society, Illinois Society of Pediatric Dentistry, Fox River Valley Dental Society and I am the past-president of the Elgin Dental Society/study club.
Dr. Matt Karsten, pediatric dentist and founder of Kids First Pediatric Dentistry received his bachelor’s degree cum laude from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Next he attended the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine. After graduating from dental school, he completed a 2 year residency in pediatrics at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. After residency, he started Kids First Pediatric Dentistry. Since he was born and raised in the area, it is an honor to serve the children growing up in the community. His vision for the practice is to nurture and care for children’s oral health from infancy to adulthood. He is an accredited member of the American Dental Association, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Academy of Pediatrics, Illinois State Dental Society, Chicago Dental Society, Illinois Society of Pediatric Dentistry, Fox River Valley Dental Society and was the past-president of the Elgin Dental Society/study club. His free time is devoted to his loving family. He and his wife Samantha have five children. When he is not spending time with his family, he’s an avid sports fan.
Dr. Kyung-Hong “Cal” Kim

Dr. Kyung-Hong “Cal” Kim joined Kids first Pediatric Dentistry in July of 2016. He left South Korea at the age of 14, and now calls Michigan his home away from home. Dr. Kim graduated from Lyman Briggs School at Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Biology. He continued on to receive a degree in Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Michigan school of Dentistry. After Graduation, Dr. Kim worked at a public health dental clinic in Providence Rhode Island, treating children and the local homeless population. After the rewarding experience he had while treating kids he then decided to pursue a career in pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Kim then completed a 2-year pediatric dental specialty program at NYU-Lutheran Medical Center in Providence. Finally, decided to return to the Midwest after completing specialty training to be closer to family in Michigan. The suburbs of Illinois are now home to Dr. Kim, his wife, and two kids. He is a big sports fanatic, and frequently attends hockey and baseball games with his kids. When he’s not working hard he spends much of his free time at the local ice rink, either playing in the men’s league or coaching his son’s hockey team.
Dr. Cory Grathwol
We are excited to add Dr. Cory Grathwol to the Kids First Family in July. He is ecstatic to join Kids First and looking forward to building lifelong relationships with patients and their families.
Dr. Cory Grathwol is originally from northwest Ohio. He graduated from the Ohio State University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences. He then went on to attend dental school at Midwestern University in Downers Grove, Illinois where he received a Doctorate in Dental Medicine, while also receiving a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences. After graduating from dental school, he completed a two-year specialty-training program in pediatric dentistry at Case Western Reserve University in conjunction with Rainbow Babies and Children Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio where he served as chief resident. Dr. Cory lives in the Chicago suburbs with his Wife Nicole. When not working, Dr. Grathwol enjoys watching his favorite Ohio sports teams, exercising, and spending time with his family. He is excited to build lifelong relationships with patients and their families.
